⢠NINE â¢
We trudge back to my room, all somber. This is quite a predicament. Carmilla couldnât have done this. Itâs impossible â sheâs been restrained for hours.
âI just donât get it. All the signs were there. They were pointing directly to Carmilla. No question. Sarah Jane shouldnât be â¦â I know my voice is cracking. Iâm on the verge of tears. Perry pats me on the back. If we were wrong, and it seems like we were, then I did a horrible thing to Carmilla. I lift an eye toward her and she snarls before turning away.
Fair.
We 100 percent screwed this up.
Danny dashes in, waving two index cards.
âThese were in their rooms on their beds. Itâs the exact same drivel that was on your card. Same muck stuck to them as was on the one left for you. Itâs all connected somehow.â
LaFontaine shadows Danny with a pair of test tubes. âIâll take some samples. Weâll figure out exactly what this sludge is.â
Danny is thinking out loud. âSomeone kidnapped Sarah Jane and Natalie, right? But why a second time? Why go through the trouble of giving them back, then kidnap them all over again?â Not to mention killing one of them.
Kirsch walks over. âI donât understand that either. It was supposed to be fun. We had beer pong and everything.â I almost feel sorry for him. Heâs all about the party.
Out of nowhere, he lunges at Carmilla, grabbing her neck. âWhy would you do this to her?â
We all leap to stop him, but itâs Danny who pries him off Carmilla. âShe wasnât there, Kirsch. Sheâs been tied up here for the last few hours. Itâs not her.â
Carmilla screams through her duct tape. I canât even look at her. This is all my fault.
Kirsch backs off, chilling out. âThanks, Summer Psycho. Iâm just freaking out about Sarah Jane. I liked her. I need to be with my bros.â
I reach for his elbow. âHang on, the bros can wait. We have to figure out why this is all happening.â
âLetâs review. One dead girl. One captured vampire,â LaFontaine says.
âNow what?â I ask.
Carmilla shifts around in her chair, banging it on the floor to get our attention.
LaFontaine checks her out. âThis is a bit of a dilemma weâre in.â
âI never wanted to kidnap anyone,â Perry snaps. âThis is a monumental mess. I think Iâm breaking out in hives.â
I state the obvious. âWe need to untie her, Danny.â
âWhat if sheâs involved somehow?â Danny says.
LaFontaine is on Dannyâs side. âIâd like to point out that it took six of us to subdue her and she still seems pissed off so Iâm not in favor of unleashing the beast.â
âItâs not her!â I insist.
âPretty sure itâs illegal to hold someone hostage,â Perry points out.
âI could take her to the bio lab. I bet thereâs all kinds of things we could learn with a little probing here and there. Blood work. Standard stuff.â No one jumps on LaFontaineâs bandwagon. âOr maybe she could answer a few questions or something.â
âLook, this is my doing,â I say.
